What is a TRS Connector?

TRS stands for Tip-Ring-Sleeve. It has two black bands separating three metal contact points:

What is a TRRS Connector?

TRRS stands for Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve. It has three black bands separating four metal contact points:

  • Tip (T): Left audio channel
  • Ring 1 (R1): Right audio channel
  • Ring 2 (R2): Ground (or microphone, depending on standard)
  • Sleeve (S): Microphone (or ground, depending on standard)

TRRS is the standard for headsets with built-in microphones — think gaming headsets, smartphone earbuds with inline mics, and streaming headsets. It carries stereo audio plus a microphone signal through one plug.

There are two competing TRRS wiring standards:

  • CTIA / AHJ (modern standard): Tip=Left, Ring1=Right, Ring2=Ground, Sleeve=Mic
  • OMTP (older standard): Tip=Left, Ring1=Right, Ring2=Mic, Sleeve=Ground

CTIA is what almost everything uses today (Apple, Samsung, Sony, gaming headsets). But if you plug an OMTP headset into a CTIA jack, the audio will sound thin and distant — that's the ground and mic signals being swapped!

Which One Should You Use?

For streaming: If you're using a standalone USB microphone (like a Blue Yeti or Shure MV7), a TRS headphone connection is all you need — your headphones just output audio. But if you're using a headset with a built-in boom mic (like a gaming headset), you need TRRS.

For music production: TRS balanced connections are your friend. They reject noise and interference over long cable runs, which is why studio monitors and audio interfaces use 1/4" TRS jacks.
