Audio Cable Types: The Complete Guide

Cables are the unsung heroes of any audio setup. The wrong cable can introduce hum, buzz, and interference that ruins your stream audio. The right cable can be dead silent. Here's everything you need to know.

Balanced vs Unbalanced: The Core Concept

This is the most important concept in audio cabling:

  • Unbalanced cables have 2 conductors: signal + ground. The ground doubles as a shield, but it's not perfect. Over long runs, the cable acts like an antenna, picking up electromagnetic interference (EMI) — that 60Hz hum you hear when a cable runs past a power supply.
  • Balanced cables have 3 conductors: hot (+), cold (-), and ground. The audio signal travels on both the hot and cold wires, but with opposite polarity. At the receiving end, any noise picked up along the way is canceled out (common-mode rejection). Magic! ✨

Cable Types Explained

🔌 XLR (Balanced)

The gold standard for professional audio. 3-pin connectors, locking mechanism, extremely durable. Used for microphones, studio monitors, and pro audio gear. XLR cables can run hundreds of feet without picking up noise.

Limitation: Bulky connectors, not for portable/consumer devices

🎧 1/4" TRS (Balanced, Tip-Ring-Sleeve)

The 1/4" (6.35mm) TRS connector looks like a big headphone plug but can carry balanced mono audio. Found on studio headphones, patch bays, and the line outputs of audio interfaces.

Common uses: Studio monitor connections, patch cables, pro headphone outputs

🎸 1/4" TS (Unbalanced, Tip-Sleeve)

Looks similar to TRS but with only one black band. Used for electric guitars, synthesizers, and other instruments. These are always unbalanced.

🔴âšĒ RCA (Unbalanced)

The red-and-white connectors everyone recognizes. Consumer-grade unbalanced connection. Fine for short runs (under 6 feet), but susceptible to ground loops and noise.

đŸ’ģ USB (Digital)

USB cables carry digital audio, not analog. The conversion from digital to analog (and vice versa) happens inside the device (like a USB microphone or audio interface). No signal degradation over distance — it either works or it doesn't.

🔆 Optical / TOSLINK (Digital)

Uses pulses of light through a fiber-optic cable. Completely immune to electrical interference. Great for connecting TVs to soundbars or DACs.

Common uses: Home theater, connecting CD players to DACs, gaming console audio

💡 Cable Golden Rules for Streamers

  1. Keep unbalanced cables short — under 10 feet (3m) if possible
  2. Use balanced connections whenever available — XLR and TRS eliminate noise
  3. Don't coil excess cable tightly — loose loops prevent electromagnetic coupling
  4. Keep audio cables away from power cables — cross at 90° if they must intersect
  5. Label your cables — future you will thank present you
